PAINTED WITH PRIDE
PAINTED WITH PRIDE (Joiner, R. 2018) Tet-Dbl-Ev-EM-Re-S23”-B5.5”Imagine the artist sitting quietly with the palate of paint in hand. The artist concentrates, then selects a different brush, gently touches the canvas, and as you watch, the brush touches the linen in a series of stokes of delightfully vivid color…and a daylily comes to life. PAINTED WITH PRIDE has a chartreuse green throat that spreads gently into golden yellow. The eyezone wash swells rapidly into glowing shades of orange which also serves as a backdrop for the golden yellow lace of the petaloids. Meanwhile, on the eyezone, petaloids, and sepals, the strong orange blends into a golden yellow edging that matches the ruffles on the petals and petaloids, while the straight edge of the sepals provides a pleasing contrast. PAINTED WITH PRIDE is peony in form, with veins that appear to be carefully applied by a tiny brush, especially in the eyezone where it is gently rouged to blend into the brilliant yellow. Diamond dust is sprinkled liberally over the flower, but it is most apparent on the petals. With a bud count of 26 and 4 way branching on bright olive evergreen foliage, it begins its bloom in midseason with a 5.5”blossum. It reliably reblooms here in 8b, creating a dramatic display for an extended time. It does set seeds. PAINTED WITH PRIDE is definitely one of the most admired attention grabbers in the garden, a true work of art that demands admiration!
